Die volle Ähre schwankt und müht! 

  Vorüber, wo die dunkelhelle 
Waldstille birgt der Liebe Rast,
Vorüber, wo die muntre Quelle
Fortplaudert in geschwätz'ger Hast! 

  Vorüber, an dem bängsten Traume,
Vorüber an der frohste Lust -- --
Du rascher Fuß, daß du am Saume
So engen Grabes halten mußt!

Sylvan silence hides love's resting-place,

Burbles on in loquacious haste!

  Past the most anxious dream,
Past the most joyful happiness -- --
You rapid foot, that you must halt
At the edge of such a narrow grave!
