Die Winde, die wehen so lind und so schaurig,
Die Vögel, die singen so süß und so traurig:
Die schwatzenden Buhlen, die werden stumm,
Sie weinen und wissen selbst nicht warum.

Ginds op hun graf, daar torent een linde,
Daar fluiten de vogels in d' avondwinden,
Beschut zit daar onder 't groene blad
Het muldersknechtje met zijn schat.
 
De winden, (zij) waaien zo licht en zo ijzig,
De vogels, (zij) zingen zo zoet, droef en lijzig.
De pratende minnaars, zij vallen stil,
Zij schreien, terwijl geen schreien wil.
