Der Reiter reitet durchs helle Tal,
Auf Schneefeld schimmert der Sonne Strahl.

Er trabet im Schweiß durch den kalten Schnee,
Er will noch heut an den Bodensee;

Noch heut mit dem Pferd in den sichern Kahn,
Will drüben landen vor Nacht noch an.

Auf schlimmem Weg, über Dorn und Stein,
Er braust auf rüstigem Ross feldein.

Aus den Bergen heraus, ins ebene Land,
Da sieht er den Schnee sich dehnen wie Sand.

Weit hinter ihm schwinden Dorf und Stadt,
Der Weg wird eben, die Bahn wird glatt.

In weiter Fläche kein Bühl, kein Haus,
Die Bäume gingen, die Felsen aus;

Le cavalier avance vers la vallée brillante,
L'éclat du soleil scintille sur les champs de neige.

Il trotte en sueur à travers la neige froide
Il veut être aujourd'hui au lac de Constance ;

Dès aujourd'hui avec son cheval il veut être dans le bateau sûr,
Il veut être de l'autre côté avant la nuit.

Sur le mauvais chemin plein d'épines et de pierres
Il gronde sur son cheval robuste.

Du haut de la montagne dans le terrain plat
Il voit la neige s'étendre comme du sable.

Loin derrière le village et la ville diminuent progressivement,
Le chemin devient plat, la route devient facile.

Dans la vaste étendue, aucune colline ni maison,
Les arbres sont partis, ainsi que les rochers.
