Wann der silberne Mond durch die Gesträuche blinkt,
Und sein schlummerndes Licht über den Rasen streut,
  Und die Nachtigall flötet,
    Wandl' ich traurig von Busch zu Busch.

Selig preis' ich dich dann, flötende Nachtigall,
Weil dein Weibchen mit dir wohnet in Einem Nest,
  Ihrem singenden Gatten
    Tausend trauliche Küsse giebt.

Überhüllet von Laub, girret ein Taubenpaar
Sein Entzücken mir vor; aber ich wende mich,
  Suche dunklere Schatten,
    Und die einsame Thräne rinnt.

E diffonde sopra il prato la sua luce sonnolenta,
e mentre l'usignolo canta,
io triste vado errando fra i cespugli.

Ti reputo felice, usignolo che gorgheggi,
perché la tua compagna condivide il nido con te,
e al suo compagno che canta
dà mille baci fedeli.

Nascosta fra il fogliame una coppia di colombi tubando
mi comunica la loro estasi; ma io mi volgo altrove,
in cerca di ombre più scure,
e scorre una lacrima solitaria.
