Wann der silberne Mond durch die Gesträuche blinkt,
Und sein schlummerndes Licht über den Rasen streut,
  Und die Nachtigall flötet,
    Wandl' ich traurig von Busch zu Busch.

Selig preis' ich dich dann, flötende Nachtigall,
Weil dein Weibchen mit dir wohnet in Einem Nest,
  Ihrem singenden Gatten
    Tausend trauliche Küsse giebt.

Überhüllet von Laub, girret ein Taubenpaar
Sein Entzücken mir vor; aber ich wende mich,
  Suche dunklere Schatten,
    Und die einsame Thräne rinnt.

Quando la luna d'argento splende attraverso le piante,
e il suo sonnolento chiarore si stende sui prati,
e l'usignolo canta,
erro malinconico di cespuglio in cespuglio.

Beato allora ti considero, usignolo che canti,
perché la tua sposina vive con te nello stesso nido,
ed al suo canoro consorte
dà mille baci d'amore.

Sommersa nel fogliame tuba una coppia di colombi
il suo incanto davanti a me, ma io mi volgo altrove,
a cercare l'ombra oscura,
e la lacrima solitaria scende.
