Die Wunde brennt, die bleichen Lippen beben
ich fühl's an meines Herzens matterm Schlage,
hier steh ich an den Marken meiner Tage
Gott, wie du willst! Dir hab ich mich ergeben.
Viel gold'ne Bilder sah ich um mich schweben;
das schöne Traumbild wird zur Totenklage.
Mut! Mut! Was ich so treu im Herzen trage,
das muß ja doch dort ewig mit mir leben!
Und was ich hier als Heiligtum erkannte,
wofür ich rasch und jugendlich entbrannte,
ob ich's nun Freiheit, ob ich's Liebe nannte:
Als lichte Seraphe seh ich's vor mir stehen;
und wie die Sinne langsam mir vergehen,
trägt mich ein Hauch zu morgenroten Höhen.

La ferida em crema, els pàl·lids llavis tremolen
ho sento en els febles batecs del meu cor,
aquí he arribat al límit dels meus dies,
Déu, com tu vulguis! A tu jo m'he lliurat.
He vist moltes imatges daurades surant al meu entorn;
la bella visió esdevé un plany de mort.
Coratge! Coratge! Allò que porto tan fidelment al cor,
ha de viure doncs amb mi, allà eternament!
I tot el que aquí com sagrat reconegué,
pel qual jo rabent i jovenívol m'abrandí,
tan si com llavors amor o llibertat l'anomenava:
el veig ara com lluminós serafí dret davant meu;
i mentre perdo lentament els sentits,
un hàlit em porta vers l'aurora celestial.
