To the Fire‑Fly
Language: English
At morning, when the earth and sky
Are glowing with the light of spring,
We see thee not, thou humble fly!
Nor think upon thy gleaming wing.

But when the skies have lost their hue,
And sunny lights no longer play,
Oh then we see and bless thee too
For sparkling o'er the dreary way.

Thus let me hope, when lost to me
The lights that now my life illume,
Some milder joys may come, like thee,
To cheer, if not to warm, the gloom!

Der Leuchtkäfer
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Bei Tage, als im Sonnenlicht
der bunte Lenz mich angelacht,
da, kleines Ding, sah ich dich nicht,
hab' nicht an deinen Schein gedacht!

Nun alles farblos geworden ist,
und keinen Glanz der Tag mehr hat,
nun seh' ich dich, sei mir gegrüßt;
dein Funkeln hellt den düster'n Pfad!

Geb' Gott, dass, wenn das Leben mir
nicht Blüten mehr und Strahlen beut,
bescheid'ne Freude dann gleich dir
den dunkeln Weg mit Licht bestreut!
