Klagt um den Heroen!
Botzaris Heldengeist
Ist uns entflohen;
Uns zu erlösen, sank er auf’s Blutfeld.

Schaut auf sein Heldenbild,
Ihm nachzustreben,
Wenn euch die Freiheit gilt 
Mehr als das Leben!
Bald dann zermalmen wir unsre Tyrannen.

Blutiger Türkenschwarm, 
Der ihn geschlachtet,
Noch ist der Freiheit Stern
Uns nicht umnachtet;
Wilder nur braust heran griechische Kampfwuth.

Nie von dir, Botzaris, 
Schweigt die Kunde;
Aller Hellenen Herz 
Traf deine Wunde.
Ruhet dein Staub im Grab, doch dein Ruhm nicht.

Steig’ ein, Unsterblicher,
Auf zu den Fernen,
Wo dir die Hütte winkt
Über den Sternen;
Bitte den Herrn der Welt für deine Treuen.

Hymn in Memoriam of Marco Botzaris

Men from Hellas,
Grieve for your hero!
Botzaris’ heroic spirit
Has left us;
He died for the sake of our salvation.

Look at his heroic life,
And take his example,
If freedom means more to you
Than life!
Soon we will defeat our tyrants.

The bloody Turks
Killed him,
We have not lost the
Star of freedom yet;
Our Greek bloodlust has just become wilder.

Your legend, Botzaris,
Will always be alive;
Your death upset
All Hellenics’ hearts.
May your body have died, your fame has not died.

Farewell, immortal hero,
Off you go to a remote place;
Where a refuge is waiting for you
Above the stars;
Beg the Lord on behalf of your loyal friends.
