by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800 - 1875)

Sei gesegnet, Hauch der Lüfte!
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Sei gesegnet, Hauch der Lüfte!
  Sei gesegnet Lippenhauch!
Sei gepriesen Rebenhügel!
  Busenhügel, sei es auch! --

Nennst du Küssen eine Sünde?
  Trinken einen Ketzerbrauch?
Mundrubine sind so lieblich;
  Weinrubine sind es auch. --

Über Ros' und Tulipane
  Schimpfet der gemeine Lauch;
Nöthig aber unserm Herzen
  Sind so schöne Blüthen auch. --

Jakob ist so glatt, so gleisend;
  Edom ist so rauh, so rauch;
Jakob aber stiehlt den Segen,
  Und die Lämmer stiehlt er auch. --

Deine Weisheit, wie beschämt sie
  Mich betrunknen armen Gauch!
Eine tiefe Nacht umhüllt mich;
  Eine tiefe Nacht dich auch. --

In den Lüften, in den Wogen,
  Im Gefild, auf Baum und Strauch --
Alles ist beglückt und selig;
  Menschenherz, o sei es auch!

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Hafis. Neue Sammlung. Von G. F. Daumer, Verlag von Bauer & Raspe in Nürnberg, 1852, pages 79-80.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the capitalized word "über" becomes "Ueber", but this is often due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography; so since the lower-case version is not "ueber", we use "Über".
