by Christian Morgenstern (1871 - 1914)

Die Hystrix
Language: German (Deutsch)
Das hinterindische Stachelschwein
(hystrix grotei Gray),
das hinterindische Stachelschwein
aus Siam, das tut weh.

Entdeckst du wo im Walde drauß
bei Siam seine Spur,
dann tritt es manchmal, sagt man, aus
den Schranken der Natur.

Dann gibt sein Zorn ihm so Gewalt,
daß, eh du dich versiehst,
es seine Stacheln jung und alt
auf deinen Leib verschießt.

Von oben bis hinab sodann
stehst du gespickt am Baum,
ein heiliger Sebastian,
und traust den Augen kaum.

Die Hystrix aber geht hinweg,
an Leib und Seele wüst.
Sie sitzt im Dschungel im Versteck
und büßt.
