Tom sails away

Scenes from my childhood are with me,
I'm in the lot behind our house upon the hill,
A spring day's sun is setting,
mother with Tom in her arms
is coming towards the garden;
the lettuce rows are showing green.
Thinner grows the smoke o'er the town,
stronger comes the breeze from the ridge,
'Tis after six, the whistles have blown,
the milk train's gone down the valley
Daddy is coming up the hill from the mill,
We run down the lane to meet him
But today! In freedom's cause Tom sailed away
for over there, over there!
Scenes from my childhood 
are floating before my eyes.

Des scènes de mon enfance sont avec moi,
Je suis dans la parcelle derrière notre maison sur la colline,
Le soleil d'un jour de printemps se couche,
Maman avec Tom dans ses bras
Arrive dans le jardin ;
Les rangées de laitue commencent à verdir.
La fumée devient plus fine au dessus de la ville,
La brise souffle plus fort depuis la crête,
C'est après six heures, les sifflets ont retenti,
Le train laitier est parti en bas dans la vallée,
Papa remonte la colline depuis le moulin,
Nous courons sur le chemin à sa rencontre.
Mais aujourd'hui ! Pour défendre la liberté Tom est parti sur la mer
Au loin, au loin !
Des scènes de mon enfance
Flottent devant mes yeux.
