Es tönt in meinen Ohren
Ein seltsam müder Klang,
Ein altes, kleines Liedchen,
Das meine Mutter sang.
Ein Königskindermärchen
Voll Sehnen und voll Licht,
Ein Lied von einer Rose,
Die im Erblühen bricht.
Ich seh' der Mutter Locken,
Seh' ihre bleiche Hand,
Sie trällert leis' das Liedchen,
Das ich nie recht verstand.

The old song
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
There rings in my ears
A peculiarly tired sound,
An old little song
That my mother sang.
A fairy tale about the children of kings
Full of longing and full of light,
A song about a rose
That perishes just as it is beginning to bloom.
I see my mother's curls,
See her pale hand,
She quietly lilts the little song
That I never quite understood.
