Wie ging er müd' des Wegs dahin,
Wie sah er mit betrübtem Sinn,
Daß Blatt um Blatt an seinen Bäumen
Verwelkt. Umsonst viel stolzes Träumen,
Umsonst sein Flehn um Sonnensegen,
Sie starben alle, trüber Regen
Fiel auf sie nieder Tag und Nacht
Mit steten Tropfens stiller Macht;
Da sieht er durch die lichten Kronen
Den großen Wolkenkönig thronen,
Und langsam fühlt er ein Begreifen
Der Seele goldne Früchte reifen.
Und wie er fern von Sonnen steht,
Faßt ihn ein jauchzendes Gebet:
O Herr vom hohen Wolkenturm,
So sende mir des Lebens Sturm!

Transformation
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
How he wended his way wearily,
How, with a saddened spirit, did he see
That leaf after leaf upon his trees
Was wilting. For naught much proud dreaming,
For naught his pleading for the blessing of the sun,
They all died; dreary rain
Fell down upon them day and night
With the silent might of continuous dripping;
Then he see through the bright treetops
The great cloud-king upon his throne,
And slowly he begins to feel a comprehension;
The soul's golden fruits ripen.
And as he stands far from suns,
He is seized by a rejoicing prayer:
Oh Lord of the high cloud-tower,
Send me then the storms of life!
