Am Felsenbruch im wilden Tann
Liegt tot und öd ein niedrig Haus;
Der Efeu steigt das Dach hinan,
Waldvöglein fliegen ein und aus.

Und drin am blanken Eichentisch
Verzaubert schläft ein Mägdelein;
Die Wangen blühen ihr rosenfrisch,
Auf den Locken wallt ihr der Sonnenschein.

Die Bäume rauschen im Waldesdicht,
Eintönig fällt der Quelle Schaum;
Es lullt sie ein, es läßt sie nicht,
Sie sinket tief von Traum zu Traum.

Nur wenn im Arm die Zither klingt,
Da hell der Wind vorüberzieht,
Wenn gar zu laut die Drossel singt,
Zuckt manches Mal ihr Augenlid.

Dann wirft sie das blonde Köpfchen herum,
Daß am Hals das güldene Kettlein klingt;
Auf fliegen die Vögel, der Wald ist stumm,
Und zurück in den Schlummer das Mägdlein sinkt.

Dans une sapinière reculée

Dans une sapinière reculée,
Il y a une maison basse, déserte et sans vie ;
Le lierre grimpe sur son toit,
Les oiseaux de la forêt y entrent et en sortent.

Et à l'intérieur, à une table bien propre,
Dort une jeune fille enchantée ;
Ses joues ont la fraîcheur d'une rose épanouie,
La lumière du soleil ondule sur ses boucles.

Les arbres bruissent dans la forêt touffue,
L'écume tombe monotone de la fontaine ;
C'est comme une berceuse , cela ne la quitte pas,
Et profondément, elle sombre de rêve en rêve.

Ce n'est que lorsqu'une main frappe la cithare,
Que passe le vent strident,
Que la grive chante bien trop fort,
Que sa paupière parfois tressaille.

Alors elle tourne sa petite tête blonde si brusquement
Qu'une petite chaîne d'or sonne à son cou ;
Les oiseaux s'envolent, la forêt fait silence,
Et la jeune fille retombe dans le sommeil.
