Ein recht Gemüt

Ein recht Gemüt
Springt mit den Nachtigallen
Auf manche Blüt,
Und freuet sich an allen!
Von [diesem]1 Zweig
Will [Jener]2 einzeln schallen,
Nicht [allzugleich]3
Wie Saat der Menschen wallen.
Doch was vermag
[Ihr]4 wallend Herz zu stören?
Nicht Trommelschlag!
Zum Trotz sie schlägt in Chören.
Nicht [Kukuksruf]5,
Von Kindern oft befraget,
Kein Schlag vom Huf,
Der über Wiesen jaget.
Nichts störet sie,
Nur heller muß sie singen,
Da höret sie
Den Widerhall erklingen;
Ist voll das Herz,
So geht der Mund wohl über,
Und Lust und Schmerz,
Wird da unendlich lieber.
Und nur zu bald
Vergißt sie sich im Schlagen,
Sich und den Wald,
Fort kann der Falk sie tragen;
Doch sieh den Falk,
Er hört ihr zu betroffen,
Der lose Schalk,
Und hält den Schnabel offen.
L. Reichardt sets stanzas 1-3

A proper spirit
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A proper spirit
Leaps with the nightingales
Upon many a blossom,
And rejoices in every one of them!
From [this]1 branch
[That [other] spirit]2 wishes to resound alone,
Not surge and bend together
With the whole mass of mankind.
Yet what is able to
Disturb [its]3 surging heart?
Not drumbeats!
It beats defiantly in a chorus.
Not the cry of a cuckoo,
Often interpreted superstitiously by children,
No sound of hoof-beats
Racing over the meadows.
Nothing perturbs it,
It is only impelled to sing more brightly,
Then it hears
The echo sounding;
When the heart is full
The mouth speaks in abundance,
And joy and pain
Becomes all the dearer.
And only too soon
It forgets itself in throbbing,
Itself and the woods,
A falcon can carry it off;
But look at the falcon,
It listens in consternation,
The silly rogue,
And holds its beak open!
