Naß war der Tag -- die schwarzen Schnecken krochen,
Doch als die Nacht schlich durch die Gärten her,
Da war der weiße Flieder aufgebrochen,
Und über allen Mauern hing er schwer.
Und über allen Mauern tropften leise
Von bleichen Trauben Perlen groß und klar,
Und war ein Duften rings, durch das die Weise
Der Nachtigall wie Gold geflochten war.

White lilacs

The day was wet -- the black snails trailed about,
But as night crept through the gardens,
The white lilac had opened,
And over all the stone walls it hung heavily.
And over all the stone walls quietly dripped
Great, clear pearls from the pale clusters,
And there was a scent round about, through which the melody
Of the nightingale was woven like gold.
