Che con glistri di dolorosi, e lassi
Facea pianger i sassi

Haveva li crin di fiori, e fronde cinto
et il suo volto tinto
di pallor e così rivolto al sole
Dicca queste parole

Conosca il mondo vil perfido ingrato
Il nome si pregiato
De la mia Ninfa, e più non potrà dire
Che si sentia morire.

Am Ufer des Tibers eines Tags im April
stand ein Hirte, hübsch und grazil,
der so bitter und so schmerzerfüllt klagte,
dass selbst Steine mit ihm weinten und zagten.

Sein Haupt war mit Blüten und Blättern geziert,
sein Antlitz bleich und deprimiert. 
Erblasst er sich zur zur Sonne wandt’
und dabei diese Worte fand:

Möge die böse und schnöde, gemeine Welt
den Namen - der mir alles wert -
meiner Liebsten wissen; mehr konnte er nicht sagen,
fühlt’ er den Tod doch schon nahen.
