Note provided by Peter Rastl: In Schubert's (and Mayrhofer's, and Goethe's) time there was a distinction between "die Angel" (= door-hinge) and "der Angel" (= fishing tackle). Only in current German both are feminine.

La canya fa estrebades, l’esquer oscil•la però surt lleuger sense res. Vosaltres, esperits aquàtics, no doneu cap tiberi per al pescador. El seu esperit sagaç no li serveix, els peixos balandregen amb caire burleta i ell resta plantat a la riba, no pot anar dins l’aigua, la terra el reté. La superfície llisa s’encrespa, agitada pel banc de criatures escatoses que alegrement belluguen llurs cossos en el segur resguard de les aigües. Les truites van d’un costat a l’altre però cap d’elles mossega l’esquer, perceben el que és la llibertat, inútils els vells trucs del pescador. La terra és poderosament bella però no és pas segura. Des de les altures glacials, les tempestes envien calamarsades i glaçades que amb una batzegada, una empenta, destrueixen el blat daurat, l’esplendor de les roses; als petits peixos, sota llur teulada mollenca, cap tempesta de la terra els pot atènyer.
