Kunde Orphé uti fordna dar
känslor och liv åt skogarna giva,
skulle han ej om hans lyra fanns kvar,
frihet hos slavarna liva?
Skulle ej cittrans ljusande slag,
skulle ej lutans dystra behag
ännu idag, ännu i dag
ljusning hos fria människor liva?

Kunde Orphé med sångens behag
hejda forsen och böljorna styra,
skulle han ej om han levde i dag,
hejda fantasternas yra.
Skulle ej flickans ljusande röst
stilla var storm i ynglingens bröst,
skänka oss tröst, skänka oss tröst,
sakta den lägre njutningens yra.
