Ich bin vergnügt, im Siegeston
Verkünd' es mein Gedicht,
Und mancher Mann mit seiner Kron
Und Scepter ist es nicht.
Und wär' er's auch; nun, immerhin!
Mag [er's]1! so ist er, was ich bin.

Des Sultans Pracht, des Mogols Geld,
Des Glück, wie hieß er doch,
Der, als er Herr war von der Welt,
Zum Mond hinauf sah noch? -
Ich wünsche nichts von alle dem,
Zu lächeln drob fällt mir bequem.

Zufrieden seyn, das ist mein Spruch!
Was hülf mir Geld und Ehr?
Das, was ich hab', ist mir genug,
Wer klug ist wünscht nicht [sehr]2;
Denn, was man wünschet, wenn man's hat,
So ist man darum doch nicht satt.

Und Geld und Ehr ist obendrauf
Ein sehr zerbrechlich Glaß.
Der Dinge wunderbarer Lauf,
(Erfahrung lehret das)
Verändert wenig oft in viel,
Und setzt dem reichen Mann sein Ziel.

Recht thun, und edel seyn und gut,
Ist mehr als Geld und Ehr;
Da hat man immer guten Muth
Und [Freude]3 um sich her,
Und man ist stolz, und mit sich eins,
Scheut kein Geschöpf und fürchtet keins.

Sóc feliç, amb un to triomfal
ho proclama el meu poema,
molts homes amb la seva corona
i el seu ceptre no ho són pas.
I encara que ho fossin, bé, millor per a ells!
Que ho siguin! així seran com jo.

El luxe del sultà, els diners del mogol,
la fortuna de qui no sé com es deia
quan era l’amo del món,
havien mai mirat la lluna?
No vull res de tot això i em plau
de somriure en front de totes aquestes coses.

Estar content, aquest és el meu lema!
De què em poden servir els diners i els honors?
Tot el que tinc és suficient per a mi,
qui és assenyat no desitja tenir més,
car quan hom vol el que ja té
no queda pas satisfet.

I a més, els diners i els honors
són com un vidre molt fràgil.
El prodigiós curs de les coses,
(l’experiència ho ensenya)
canvia de poc a molt
i és l’objectiu de l’home ric.

Fer tot el que és just i noble i bo,
val més que els diners i els honors;
aleshores un està sempre de bon humor,
ple de joia a l’entorn
i orgullós de si mateix,
sense defugir ni témer cap criatura.
