Maria singt zur gold'nen Abendstund aus reinem Herzen und rotem Mund. Die Rosen stehn auf hohen Stielen, ein Vogel lauschet ihr im Ried. Dann schlummert 's Kind in ihrem Schoß und ihre Augen glänzen groß, in ihrem Mund versummt das Wiegenlied. Im Wasser, wie Perlmutt, der Mondschein, doch in den Schatten schleicht der Tod. Ein Glück ist, dass sie ihn nicht sieht - tritt er doch später ein.
