-- Juchhe, Musik!

A hall bright with candlelight And rattling of spurs and the gold of tresses. My blood resounds in my veins. My girl, give me the goblet! And now to the dance! The waltz is romping; Heated by wine, my bubbling courage Desires all the joys I have not yet savoured -- Outside the windows my horse neighs. And outside the windows the night shrouds The dark field. From far away the wind Carries the thunder of cannons hither. Only one more hour to the battle! -- Dance more quickly, love; time is passing, The storm-wind is waving the broom bushes back and forth, [The bushes] that shall be my bed in the coming night -- My deathbed, perhaps. -- Hurrah, music! In thirsty draughts my hot gaze drinks in The young, beautiful, red life, And can never drink enough of its light to be satiated. Only one more dance! How soon! and candlelight And sound and joy shall be extinguished; mournfully The moonlight weaves its wreath in death and horror. -- Hurrah, music! The house quakes from the dance, Aquiver, my hanging sword rattles on the column. -- Outside the windows my horse neighs.
