Gedächtnis der Mutter
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
Lange ging ich auf den Straßen
Der bestaubten Tageswelt,
Ganz von deinem Bild verlassen,
Ganz auf mich allein gestellt.
Jetzt, da meine Ziele logen,
In der Fremde halt ich Rast,
Von Erinnerungsduft umflogen,
Bei der alten Zeit zu Gast.
Und in so betrübter Stunde,
Da die Welt mich ganz verließ,
Bist du da und gibst mir Kunde
Vom verlornen Paradies.
Daß ich keinen Gott mehr wisse,
Hast du schon vergeben mir,
Aus dem Tal der Finsternisse
Kehr ich endlich heim zu dir.

Remembrance of my mother
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Long I wandered upon the streets
Of the dusty world of day,
Utterly deserted by your image,
Utterly on my own.
Now that my goals have lied to me,
I stop for rest in the foreign land,
Wafted about by the scent of memories,
A guest of olden times.
And in such a melancholy hour,
When the world has utterly forsaken me,
You are there and bring me tidings
Of the lost paradise.
That I no longer know any god,
You have already forgiven me,
From the valley of darknesses,
I finally return home to you.
