La mare va i ve per les seves cambres, buida i torna a omplir els armaris, gemegant, cerca no sap què i no troba res més que una casa buida. La casa buida! Oh paraules de planyiment per a qui, antany, hi tenia un infant encisador on de dia el portava en braços i de nit dolçament el bressolava. Els faigs verdegen de nou l’esclat del sol ha tornat, però, mare, deixa de buscar, el teu estimat infant no tornarà mai més. I quan bufa l’oreig del capvespre, el pare torna a casa, a la llar, llavors es desvetlla quelcom en ell, gairebé un somriure, però que de seguida es transforma en llàgrimes. El pare sap que a les seves estances trobarà la pau de la mort, sentirà només els gemecs de la mare esblaimada i cap petit infant li somriurà.
