Voici le soir. Au ciel passe un vol de pigeons.
Rien ne vaut pour charmer une amoureuse fièvre,
Ô chevrier, le son d’un pipeau sur la lèvre
Qu’accompagne un bruit frais de source entre les joncs.

À l’ombre du platane où nous nous allongeons
L’herbe est plus molle. Laisse, ami, l’errante chèvre,
Sourde aux chevrotements du chevreau qu’elle sèvre,
Escalader la roche et brouter les bourgeons.

Ma flûte, faite avec sept tiges de ciguë
Inégales que joint un peu de cire, aiguë
Ou grave, pleure, chante ou gémit à mon gré.

Viens. Nous t’enseignerons l’art divin du Silène,
Et tes soupirs d’amour, de ce tuyau sacré,
S’envoleront parmi l’harmonieuse haleine.
