by François Coppée (1842 - 1908)

Juillet
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  CHI
Le ciel flambe et la terre fume,
La caille frémit dans le blé ;
Et, par un spleen lourd accablé,
Je dévore mon amertume.

Sous l’implacable Thermidor
Souffre la nature immobile ;
Et dans le regret et la bile
Mon chagrin s’aigrit plus encor.

Crève donc, cœur trop gonflé, crève,
Cœur sans courage et sans raison,
Qui ne peux vomir ton poison
Et ne peux oublier ton rêve !

Par cet insultant jour d’été,
Cœur torturé d’amour, éclate !
Et que, de ta fange écarlate
Me voyant tout ensanglanté,

Ainsi que l’apostat antique,
Avec un blasphème impuissant,
Je jette à pleines mains mon sang
A ce grand soleil ironique !
