Sie lachte und scherzte mit Sang und Gekos' 
unter Rosen. 
Sie küßt' ihm das Auge, sie küßt' ihm die Wang': 
"Gott gebe, ich säh' dich mein Leben lang! unter Rosen, 
unter Rosen!" 

Die Vögel verzogen, kein Lied mehr erschallt 
unter Rosen. 
Im Sarg lag der Knabe, so blaß und so kalt 
unter Rosen. 
Und weinend die Mutter den Kranz um ihm schlang: 
"Nun werd' ich dich sehen mein Leben lang unter Rosen,
