A paar davon hab' i von früher her 'kennt; das Wiederseh'n vergess' ich nie! Ja im Himmel is herrlich etc. Hörst, Adam, da will i in Ewigkeit bleib'n, I schrei glei: Verkaufts ma mein G'wand! Ja im Himmel is herrlich etc.

Tonight I dreamed that I was in heaven. The dream was very strange indeed. What there I saw goes round in my head, I can't get rid of it. The reception was glorious with all its splendour, and then all my acquaintances from the past! The sun shone at night as bright as at daytime, and nowhere but a trace of sadness! Aye, in heaven, there it's splendid, in heaven, there it's great; I know what I'm talking about, because I have seen it! I dreamed that I stood at heaven's door, that I knocked and asked to be let in. St. Peter was near immediately and a bunch of fine angels at his side. Some of them I knew from former times, and I'll never forget this reunion; they used to frequent the Kärntnerstraße1, Catherine, Laura and Mary. Ay in heaven, there it's splendid etc. Eve has an apple-booth there above, her business is successful as it was before. And Adam introduced me - I must say that for him - into heaven's most intimate circles. The fun we had - it's beyond description, all the Viennese presented themselves there. Look, Adam, I'd like to stay here for all eternity and shout loudly: Sell ye my garments! Ay in heaven, there it's splendid etc. Joseph - the chaste one! - I also met there; he told me the story of his troubles. For a certain Mrs. Potiphar didn't behave well; he's still missing his cloak. All of a sudden a crash, I fall off the bed, wake up - and the jolly time was ended. This dream was surely the most splendid of all, and therefore I say at all times: Ay in heaven, there it's splendid etc.
Note for stanza 3: see Genesis, 39, 13.
