sometimes misattributed to Friederike Schmidt (1801 - 1837) and possibly by Friedrich Wilhelm August Schmidt (1764 - 1838)

An die Nachtigall
Language: German (Deutsch)
Deinem sanftflötenden
  Ton, Philomele,
Weichen die tödtenden
  Schmerzen der Seele,
Weichet der Kummer nicht, der mich verzehrt.

Singest du, seliger
  Vogel, der Liebe?
Lächeln dir, frölicher
  Durch ihre Triebe,
Lenzflur und Haine, von Blüten beschwert?

Die dich auf blühendem
  Wipfel beglücket,
Hat mit schnellfliehendem
  Wahn mich berücket,
Hat mir den Freuden, ach! keine gewährt.

The poem is included in Gedichte von Friedrich Schmit., Nürnberg: im Verlag der J. G. Lochnerischen Buchhandlung, 1779, pages 16 - 17, and in Gothaische gelehrte Zeitungen, Zweytes Stück, den sechsten Jenner, 1779, Halle, 1779, pages 628-629, where the author is referred to as "Friedrich Schmid".
