by Friedrich Theodor Vischer (1807 - 1887)

Der Schlaf
Language: German (Deutsch)
Man hat schon oft gesagt,
Du seiest des Todes Bild,
O Knabe, still und mild,
Süße Schlaf!

Ich aber versteh' es:
Weil die wilden Gedanken,
Die umgetriebenen, todeskranken,
Nicht mehr sind.

Morden kann ich sie nicht,
Aber sie nicken und schlummern ein
In deinem Dämmerschein
Ganz sachte.

Bringst du denn nicht auch bald,
Wenn ich ruf' und stehe zu dir,
Deinen bleichen Bruder mir
An der Hand?

Bringst du ihn immer nicht?
Er hat, was das Herz vermißt,
Hat, was das Beste ist,
Kein Erwachen.
