by André Henri Constant van Hasselt (1806 - 1874)

Notre‑Dame de Tudèle
Language: French (Français)
S'il m'aime, ô Vierge, ô Vierge sainte !
Chaque matin je placerai
Une couronne d'hyacinthe
Au pied de ton autel doré.
Car j'attends (comme l'hirondelle
Le vert printemps) mon maître et roi.
O Notre-Dame de Tudèle,
  Assiste-moi !

Pour m'envoler sous le ramage,
Donne-moi l'aile d'un oiseau ;
J'y veux chercher la belle image
Qui danse autour de mon fuseau,
Et m'en aller à tire-d'aile
Lui porter mon coeur et ma foi.
O Notre-Dame de Tudèle,
  Assiste-moi !

Ou prête-moi la voix touchante
De la fauvette des buissons,
Pour que, dans l'ombre, je lui chante
La plus tendre de mes chansons.
Mais, comme au vent une asphodèle,
Si je tremble, dis-lui pourquoi.
O Notre-Dame de Tudèle,
  Assiste-moi !

Confirmed with André van Hasselt, Primevères, pages 325-326. The poem is preceded by the following epigraph:

Hat er 's in meinem Auge nicht gelesen?
Matthisson.
