Las mañanitas camperas
yo no sé a qué comparar
para decir lo bonitas
que ellas son en realidad
unas visten de violeta
las otras de oro y de cal
unas vienen tan callando
que no se las ve llegar
otras a gritos de sol
que es como me gustan más.
A veces mitad del cielo
es día y la otra mitad
tiene oscuridad y estrellas
como noche de verdad
un viento como un suspiro
de la noche que se va
deja como un poncho al cuello
un resto de oscuridad
que en el lejano horizonte
deshilachándose está.
Aparecieron los árboles
en la niebla matinal
y los pastos tiritando
parecen campanillear;
las gotitas de rocío
que la noche dio en llorar
cada estrella que se fue
dio una flor en su lugar,
y el asoma un poquito
lleno de curiosidad.

Sweet country mornings
I don’t know how to compare
to express how beautiful
they really and truly are;
some come wearing purple
others are golden and lime,
some come so quietly
you don’t see them arrive,
others come screaming with sun,
and those are the ones I like.
Sometimes half the sky
is day and the other
has darkness and stars
like an actual night;
a wind like a sigh
of the night going away
leaves a scarf around its neck –
the remains of the darkness
that on the distant horizon
already is fraying apart.
The trees have appeared
in the morning mist
and the grasses shivering
seem to be tinkling with joy;
the tiny dew drops
that the night has wept away,
each star that has departed
left a flower in its place
and the sun is peeking out
full of wonder and delight.
Translator's note: Mañanita is a diminutive of mañana, which means morning. Diminutives in Spanish can be used to add a nuance of affection or tenderness.
