In the shadow of the mighty linden trees
Stands a solitary little church,
Upon the green mountain meadows
Wafted about with heavenly breezes.

  From out of a frame one is greeted
By an image of the Mother of God,
The hands of the lovely and gentle Mother
Bless us silently.

  And as the bells ring
Down to the depths of the valley,
They bring the Mother’s greetings
To hearts that are woeful and sore.

  It seems to me as if they are
Calling up to the Mother’s heart
All the sleeping hearts,
[All] the anxiety and the pain.

  And many a one who came
To the Mother lovely and gentle,
His woe was taken from him
Before the holy image of mercy.

  And many a one who came,
With a heart sore with sins,
He returned down to the depths
Of the valley enflamed with [devout] love.

  Be hailed in the linden trees’ shadow,
Oh ye solitary little church,
Upon the green mountain meadows,
Full of lofty heavenly peace!
