Der Hügel
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ein Knäblein stand auf einem Hügel,
Blickt in die Gegend rings umher,
Da spielt der Wind mit sanften Flügel
Ihm um das Haupt; er seufzt so schwer.

Warum? Warum? Das wuss't er nicht.
Und bei des Mondes Schein
Gewahrt er ein Gesicht
Wie Nebel zart und fein.

Es schwebt als lichter Schatten
Auf dunkler Wiesen Matten.
Und als er erblickt,
Es ihm so traulich nickt.
Es war ein Gruss aus besser'm Land;
Auf Mutter's Grab der Knabe stand.

The Hill
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A boy stands on a hill,
Gazing around,
The gentle wings of the wind play
Around his head; [but] he sighs heavily.

Why? Why? He didn’t know.
And in the moonlight
He sees a face
Through the delicate, fine mist.

It hovers like a pale shadow
Over the mat of dark meadows.
And as he continues to look,
It nods to him in recognition.
It was a greeting from a better place;
On his mother’s grave, stood the boy.
