Der Kujawjab
Language: German (Deutsch)
Kennst Du den grünen Strand,
Der an dem See
Schatten der Trümmerwand
Weckt tiefes Weh?
Da ist mein Vaterland
Das mich verstiess.
Wo ich die Liebe fand
Die ich verliess.
Tief in der oeden Brust
Wohnt Einsamkeit
Die sich des Leids bewusst
Nimmer befreit!
Sehnsucht, Erinnrungsweh
Verschliesst das Grab --
Denk ich an jenen See
Zieht mich's hinab.

The Kujawjab
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Do you know the green shore
That along the lake
[By the] shadows of a ruined wall,
Wakens deep woe?
There is my homeland,
Which cast me out,
Where I found the dear one
Whom I left.
Deep within my desolate breast
Lives loneliness
That, cognisant of its sorrow,
Never frees itself!
My grave shall enclose
Yearning, the woe of remembrance --
When I think of that lake,
I am drawn downward.
