Nachtgraun ohne Morgenrot.

Word of Life, pure well-spring That pours forth from Heaven, You give life-powers to everyone Who opens spirit and heart to you; To everyone who, like the wilted flower That the burning sun has bleached, Bows down, thirsting, from the arid land To the well-spring. Without [you, what is the world?]1 A narrow, dark valley. Without [you, what is Heaven?]2 A hall of happiness locked to us. Without you, what is life? A renewed darksome death. Without you, what is dying? Night-horror without dawn. Word of Life, you illuminate But at the same time warm us; You reveal a hell, But also a heavenly realm. You frighten the sinner fearfully Out of his dull, idle rest; But with love you again cover The failings of everyone who repents. You teach us to fear a judge Who weighs with a true scale; But also to love a Father Who carries everyone with forbearance; A God, who gives His beloved Only Son to be sacrificed, Who in Him judges sin And in Him loves sinners. Word of Life, whoever hears you, To him you promise eternal salvation; But only he who cleaves unto you Shall someday receive that treasure; Therefore, I shall harbour you, Sword of the Spirit, God’s Word, Help me to fight here upon earth And to attain the crown on high!
