Novembersonnenblick
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Die Berge stehn so dunkelschwarz,
Als wie in tiefer Trauer;
Die Büsche zittern vor dem Wind,
Als wie in Fieberschauer.

Da bricht mit Müh' ein letzter Strahl
Durch eine Wolkenschichte;
In weiter Fern' ein Gipfel noch
Erglänzt in hellem Lichte.

Und tröstend flüstert's aus dem Strauch
Hinein in meine Klage:
Nie fehlt, o nie ein Sonnenblick
Dem allertrübsten Tage!

Und wär's ein noch so matter Strahl,
Dein Leid mag er zerstreuen;
Gar wenig braucht's, um himmelhoch
Den Armen zu erfreuen!

Confirmed with Liederbuch von Friedrich Oser, 1842-1874. Mit einem biographischen Verzeichnis der Componisten, Basel: Benno Schwabe, Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1875, pages 137-138.

Glimpse of the sun in November
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The mountains stand so darkly black,
As if in deep mourning;
The bushes tremble before the wind
As if in the tremor of a fever.

Then, laboriously, a last sunbeam
Breaks through a layer of clouds;
In the far distance a peak still
Glows in bright light.

And comfortingly from out of the bush
A whispering enters my pain:
Never, oh never is a glimpse of the sun lacking
On the dreariest of days!

And be it ever so pale a beam,
It may disperse your pain;
Very little is necessary to cause
The poor one to soar to the heavens in gladness!
