Translation by Ernst Ortlepp (1800 - 1864)

On a Cornelian Heart which was Broken
Language: English
Ill-fated Heart! and can it be,
That thou should'st thus be rent in twain?
Have years of care for thine and thee
Alike been all employ'd in vain?

Yet precious seems each shatter'd part,
And every fragment dearer grown,
Since he who wears thee feels thou art
A fitter emblem of his own.

Confirmed with Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, a Romaunt: and other Poems, seventh Edition, London: John Murray, 1814, page 237. Appears in Poems.

Unglücklich Herz, und konnt' es sein
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Available translation(s): ENG
