Glücklich, wer den Tag erlebt,
Der uns heut vereint;
Wem das Herz noch freudig bebt,
Noch die Sonne scheint!
Sieh! wie Viele schlafen schon
In dem kühlen Grund;
Nur ihr Gruß wie Harfenton
Klingt an's Ohr zur Stund.
Glücklich, wer an junger Lust
Noch das Aug' entfacht,
Daß der Mai ihm in der Brust
Wie vor Zeiten lacht.
Und vom schönen Bund das Lied
Frisch wie einst erschallt,
Als ob nie die Jugend schied,
Nie ein Klang verhallt.
Zwiefach glücklich, wer da singt
Mit dem eignen Sohn!
Horch! wie froh und freudig schwingt
Sich empor der Ton!
Zwiefach fest, o Vaterland,
Heil dir! wirst du stehn,
Wenn die Söhne Hand in Hand
Mit den Vätern gehn.

Happy is he who lives to see
This day that today unites us;
He whose heart still trembles joyfully,
[For whom] the sun still shines!
Lo! how many already sleep
In the cool earth;
Only their greeting, like the sound of a harp,
Touches our ears at this hour.
Happy is he who can still ignite
His eyes at young joy
So that May laughs in his bosom
As it did in times gone by.
And from the beautiful bond the song
Rings out briskly as of yore,
As if youth had never departed,
As if never a sound had died away.
Twice happy is he who sings
With his own son!
Hark! how joyfully and happily
The sounds surge upward!
Oh homeland, hail! you shall stand
Doubly firmly rooted,
When your sons walk hand in hand
With their fathers.
