Ihr des Himmels Pracht mir heut, 
Da zum Preis des Herrn mich wecket, 
Horch! des Sonntags Festgeläut? 
  Hat's vergessen denn der Himmel, 
Daß sich freun will alle Welt, 
Da auf's irdische Gewimmel, 
Weh! kein Strahl des Lichtes fällt? 

  Freu, mein Herz, der Sabbatswonne
Heute drum dich minder nicht, 
Ob auch rings die goldne Sonne 
Hat verhüllt ihr Segenslicht! 
  Sing getrost nur deine Lieder, 
Schwing dich auf von allem Gram: 
Weißt ja, daß der Himmel wieder 
Heute zu der Erde kam!

  Dreary clouds! why do you hide
The glory of the sky from me today,
When I am awakened to praise the Lord,
Hark! by Sunday's festive tolling of bells?
  Has the sky forgotten then
That the whole world wishes to be happy,
When upon the earthly bustle,
Woe! no beam of light falls?

  My heart, do not be any less glad today
In the bliss of the Sabbath,
Though all around the golden sun
Has shrouded its blessed light!
  Only sing your songs confidently,
Rise above every sorrow:
For you know that Heaven has 
Come to earth once again today!
