Tuftekall seg likar godt,

Gamal Kar
han er i Gard;
strengt han all Ting agtar.
Fylgde blid
fraa fyrste Tid
med i baade Stræv og Strid,
og helst han Fjose vaktar.

Difor òg
veit han fjaag
kva han hev i Vente.

Crépuscule

La neige tombe
dans le soir gris,
silencieusement, dans l'air doux.
Silencieuse et épaisse,
légère et moelleuse,
elle s'étend sur la ferme comme un édredon,
la recouvrant d’un blanc duvet.

Veslemøy
lie le foin
dans la grange obscure.
Le  nisse
chante tout bas ;
le vieux génie de la ferme est satisfait
lorsque le bétail reçoit sa nourriture.

Le vieux gardien
est dans la ferme ;
il veille sévèrement sur toute chose.
Depuis les premiers temps,
il accompagne avec bienveillance
les jours de peine comme les jours de lutte,
et surtout il veille sur l'étable.

C'est pourquoi
il sait bien
ce qui l'attend.
Corps gris,
bonnet rouge,
chaque soir il reçoit son bol de lait
des mains de la gentille jeune fille.

Elle apporte la nourriture
à ses chères vaches ;
et elle caresse
chacune d'elles.
Elle les soigne volontiers ;
elle a toujours aimé les animaux,
et n'a jamais eu peur du nisse.

Elle apporte de l'eau tiède
aux bêtes assoiffées
depuis la cuisine de la ferme.
Et rapidement
Elle allume la lanterne,
trait les vaches avec calme,
et remplit le seau jusqu'au bord.

Alors les vaches,
propres et bien nourries,
s'apaisent pour la nuit.
Elles ruminent un peu,
puis se couchent tranquillement.
Le nisse revient avec une nouvelle poignée de foin ;
ensuite il danse avec le chat.
