Woher die Blume kam,
Noch auch woher die Thräne
In Freude oder Gram.
Und wie am Strauch die Blume
Den Dorn vor dir verhüllt,
So lindert auch die Thräne
Den Schmerz, der dich erfüllt.
Und wie sie ist gekommen
Versiegt die Thräne auch,
Und eh du's ahn'st ist wieder
Von Blumen leer der Strauch.

Flowers and tears
Are very closely related,
For suddenly the flower
And also the tear appears.
No know is able to say
Whence the flower came,
Nor whence the tear [came]
In joy or in sorrow.
And as upon the bush the flower
Conceals the thorn from you,
Thus the tear also assuages
The pain that fills you.
And as it came,
The tear also dries up,
And before you fathom it, once more
The bush is devoid of flowers.
