Oh God! since I could find No counsel at all for my soul, You through the water of baptism Have washed me clean from sin; Thereby you have clearly evinced, And through a visible sign, Oh Father, Son and Holy Spirit, That there is nothing to compare With Thy mercy and love. For willingly and from the bottom of Thy heart, As soon as I came to Thee, You took me up Into Thy covenant as Thy child. Thou hadst cause rather To punish and to hate me, And didst, oh great God, so greatly Lower Thyself [to me] To institute the covenant with me. Because of that, I am now as [Thy] child Made certain of Thy mercy, What I find of weakness in myself Thou dost not let it harm me. Thou givest me the spirit of childship, And when I step before Thee, Pour out my heart before Thee, oh God, Pray according to Thy will, I am always heard. In return I have made it my duty Always to be assiduous, By the assurance of faith, To maintain a good conscience: To recognize Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit As my God, And together with valued Christendom With worship and honour call Thee The only Lord and Father. I have renounced the evil enemy, And all his works; And this covenant, which puts him to flight, Can strengthen me to resist him. I am, oh God! Thy temple now, And once more born anew, I have been chosen In order to do righteous works, And those [works] that Thou hast Thyself commanded. The old self must die off, But the new self must live, I must always resist The bad desires that I have; I must always adhere to the good, Must do Thy will, With diligence and care must think That I may fulfil [Thy will] Through Thy strength and might. God Father, Son and Holy Spirit, grant That I may firmly believe in Thee, That I may [find comfort and]1 rejoice in the covenant of my baptism, [Remain]2 steadfast within it; As Thy child despise the works of the devil, Suppress the evil lusts, Never grow weary in doing good, Do battle until the end here [on earth], And inherit Thy Kingdom there [in the hereafter].
