Weerklink nog eenmaal, harpklank, Die slechts gevoel uitzingt! Laat zacht je lied verklinken, Je zwanenzang verzinken, Die op de stroom des levens Met troost de nood verdringt. In 't morgenlicht van 't leven, Toen klonk jij licht en hel! Wie kan de klank bewaren? Door vorsen en ervaren Gaat kwijnen en verdrogen Van 't lied de zuiv're wel. In latere jongelingsjaren Klinkt het reeds teer en bang, Als vinkenslag in 't voorjaar; De uitbotpijn is voelbaar, Doet beven hart en snaren, Vol liefde en gezang. In de zomerdag van 't leven Verstomt het snarenspel! Op 'n ziel die haakt naar strelen Doet 't slechts, als Philomele1, Niet vaak meer maar wel roerend, Een zwaarmoedig appèl. O, klink in de donk're boezem Van d' ernst'ge avondtijd! Als ooit om 't barre leven Het noodlot nacht gaat weven, Klink dan en wek verlangen Naar de onsterf'lijkheid!
1 Philomele was door Tereus, haar zwager, de tong uitgesneden om te voorkomen dat zij hem, haar verkrachter, verraden zou aan zijn gemalin Procne. Later, nadat de zusters op Tereus gruwelijk wraak genomen hadden, vluchtten zij. Philomele veranderde in een nachtegaal, Procne in een zwaluw (zie Ovidius, Metamorphosen).
