Ein Fels ragt in den See hinein,
Wo Wind und Welle kosen!
Dort wuchern über dem Gestein
Die jungen wilden Rosen!
Dort glitt vorüber unser Kahn,
Und du in heller Freude
Du streckst die kleinen Hände
Nach dem duftigen Geschmeide.
Von Rosen flocht' ich einen Kranz
In deine blonden Locken!
Doch, wie dein Blick mich freudig traf,
Da bin ich still erschrocken,
Mir ward's als ob der frohe Kranz
Dir nicht in Freuden bliebe!
Als brächt' dir einst dieselbe Hand
Die Dornenkron' der Liebe!

Lake image
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A rock projects into the lake,
Where wind and wave cavort!
Over the rocks the young, wild roses
Grow luxuriantly!
Our skiff skimmed past there
And you, in utter joy,
Stretched out your little hands
For those scented jewels.
From the roses I wove a wreath
For your blonde curls!
But as you gazed at me joyfully,
A silent fear struck me.
It seemed to me that the happy wreath
Would not remain [on your head] in joy,
That this same hand would someday
Bring you Love's crown of thorns!
