Ich tret' hinein mit Freuden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ich tret' hinein mit Freuden
Wohl in den grünen Wald.
Horch, wie es in den Zweigen,
Wie's in den Bergen schallt!
Was singt ihr doch, ihr Vöglein,
Was singt ihr doch so gern?
Wie lange währt's, so müßt ihr
Ja fort von Ihr und fern!
Was jauchzt ihr [doch]1, ihr Quellen,
Als bliebet ihr bei Ihr?
Und müßt doch immer weiter
Und müßt doch fort von hier!
Laßt mir, laßt mir das Singen,
Das Jauchzen lasset mir!
So lang' ich bin und lebe,
Bleib' ich fortan bei Ihr!
J. Lang sets stanzas 3-4

The wanderer addressing the water‑springs
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
With happiness I step
Into the green woods.
Hark, how it resounds
In the branches, in the mountains!
Why ever are you singing, you birds,
Why ever are you singing so gladly?
However long it may last,
You must go away, far away, from Her!
Why are you [rejoicing]1, you water-springs,
As if you were staying near Her?
Whereas you must [flow] ever onward,
And must go away from here!
Leave, oh leave the singing to me.
Leave to me the rejoicing!
From now on, as long as I exist and live,
I shall remain with Her.
