Herz, mein Herz, so schweig auch du

Auf den klaren Fluten malen
Sich der Sonne letzte Strahlen,
Über Wald und Wiesengrün,
Über Berg und Fluren hin
Breitet schon in sanfter Feier
Dämmrung ihre Nebelschleier:
Durch zerstreute Wolken bricht
Sanfter Sterne Silberlicht!
Es verstummt der Ruderschlag.
Heimgegangen ist der Tag!
Alles, alles eilt zur Ruh,
Herz, mein Herz, so schweig auch du!
Wie die Flut hier, still und eben,
Floss dahin mein junges Leben,
Hell wie diese Abend-Sonne
Glänzte da mein Aug' von Wonne!
Und die Hoffnung so schmeichelnd milde
Zeigte liebliche Gebilde:
Führte mich mit lieber Hand
In der Liebe Blumenland.
Aus der Zukunft dunkler Ferne
Strahlten still des Glückes Sterne!
Doch sie sanken all' hinab.
Glück und Hoffnung deckt ein Grab!
Doch im Grab wird allen Ruh!
Herz, mein Herz, so schweig auch du!

Heart, my heart, fall silent too
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon the clear water are painted
The last rays of the sun.
Over the forest and the green meadow,
Over mountains and valleys,
In gentle ceremony, twilight
Is spreading its misty veil.
Through scattered clouds breaks
The soft, silvery light of the stars!
The sound of the oars ceases.
The day has gone to rest,
Everything, everything is hastening to its repose.
Heart, my heart, fall silent too!
Like this river, quietly and smoothly
My young life flowed away.
As brightly as this evening sun
My eyes shone with joy!
And hope, so flatteringly mild,
Showed me lovely images;
It led me with its dear hand
Into the flowery land of love.
From the dark distance of the future
The stars of happiness quietly shone.
But they all faded away.
Happiness and hope are buried in a grave!
But in the grave, all find rest!
Heart, my heart, fall silent too!
