O Vaterland! wann will es tagen? O Vaterland! wann will es tagen? So schön, so schön bist du, mein Vaterland! Erwach!

When your mountains glow in the rosy light So loftily at the first tremor of morning, Oh see how they gaze full of sorrow, With solemn admonition, into the valley! Oh homeland! when shall there be dawn? Thus they ask in mute woe, Their heads lifted as if in lamentation, Oh homeland! arise, arise! Alas! your sun has set! The misery of discord Shudders through you like the raging of a storm! To be sure, the mountains on high glow so radiantly, When shall the rosy glow of morning shine for you as well? Oh homeland! when shall there be dawn? Thus they ask in mute woe, Their heads lifted as if in lamentation, Oh homeland! arise, arise! You are so beautiful, so beautiful, my homeland! Awaken! -- break through the darkness of death, So that the sparkling of the morning light May shine around you like a sacrificial fire! Oh land, oh land! that once more peace And faithfulness may prevail in your counties, And, radiant with joy, your mountains may Look down upon you in blessing!
