Beruhigung

Ist mir's zu Muthe schwül und bang,
so summ' ich mir ein Liedchen leise,
nie hörte ich der Worte Klang,
ich kenne nur die traute Weise.

Zu meiner Wiege neigte sich
der Mutter süßer Mund hernieder
und sang den Schlaf, wenn er entwich,
zurück auf meine müden Lider.

Ein Kind, das nimmer schlafen will,
hör' in der eignen Brust ich stöhnen,
doch auch das kranke Herz wird still,
sing' ich es ein mit diesen Tönen.
