Golden breiten sich die Felder,
Wogen sacht im Erntedrang,
Und vom Dörfchen übern Berge
Kommt der Vesperglocken-Klang.

Unter deinem Schritte neigen
Sich die Halme in den Grund,
Sehnsucht träumt in deinen Augen,
Und es zuckt um deinen Mund.

Angstvoll fass' ich deine Hände,
Doch dein abgewandter Blick
Kehrt aus seiner lichten Ferne
Zögernd nur zu mir zurück.

Evening walk

Golden the fields spread out,
Surging gently in their urge to be harvested,
And from the village over the mountain
Comes the sound of the evening bells.

Under your steps the blades of grass
Are bowed down in the vale,
Yearning dreams in your eyes,
And there is a twitching about your lips.

Fearfully I grasp your hands,
But your averted gaze
Returns only hesitatingly to me
From its bright distance.
